The Port of Virginia's container terminals are Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) and Virginia International Gateway (VIG), both with rail to Norfolk Southern and CSX. The Hampton Roads Chassis Pool is the port's own chassis fleet, more than 17,000 chassis, available at NIT, VIG and the Virginia Inland Port among other locations; truckers using it sign the pool's interchange agreement.
Motor carriers need a SCAC code and UIIA membership, drivers carry a TWIC and are registered with the port, trucks carry a PRO-PASS RFID tag, and reservations are required during the port's mandatory reservation period. We book inside that system as soon as the container is released.

After the gate: Virginia, Ohio and the mid-Atlantic
The Virginia Inland Port at Front Royal, in northern Virginia, serves the Washington, DC, Baltimore, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia markets; a container railed there is collected and drayed from Front Royal instead of Norfolk. Ohio and the upper Midwest are reached on Norfolk Southern's rail from the terminals, with drayage from the destination ramp. Airlift arranges the move as a broker; it owns no trucks or warehouses in Virginia.
