Charleston is an East Coast port on Airlift's India lanes, with Mundra and Nhava Sheva to Charleston listed in Airlift's bookings report among the biggest pairs on the lane, and pair pages from Chennai, Ennore, Kattupalli and Kolkata. It serves South Carolina, the Charlotte area and, by rail, the upstate manufacturing corridor along Interstate 85.

Airlift has no office in Charleston. The US side of each shipment is run from the New Jersey office: the Importer Security Filing, the customs entry filed by a licensed broker, the terminal appointment and the truck.

Where the containers come in

SC Ports' container terminals in Charleston are Wando Welch Terminal, which handles about 80% of the port's container volume, Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal and North Charleston Terminal. SC Ports owns and runs its own chassis pool, the SMART Pool, with depots at the three terminals and at the inland ports; trucking companies enroll with a SCAC code and UIIA membership.

Inland Port Greer, on the I-85 corridor in upstate South Carolina, is served by Norfolk Southern with an overnight shuttle to and from Charleston six days a week. Inland Port Dillon, just off Interstate 95, is served by CSX. A container railed to either is collected there, which shortens the truck leg to inland warehouses.

Drayage from the three terminals is arranged through contracted motor carriers. As at every port, the container needs the freight release and the customs release before a pickup; we book the terminal pickup as soon as the container is available, so the move happens inside free time. Charlotte, Greenville–Spartanburg and Columbia are trucked from Charleston or collected at Inland Port Greer.

Airlift USA has been in business since 1999 and is an FMC-licensed NVOCC (FMC No. 016162), not a customs broker: the customs entry is filed through its licensed customs-broker network, and US trucking is arranged as a non-asset, FMCSA-licensed property broker through contracted motor carriers.
