How this estimator works
When you choose a port pair, the tool queries the same carrier sailing-schedule feed that powers the Airlift vessel schedule search, asking for departures over the next four weeks. Every number it then shows — shortest, typical and longest transit — is computed from those returned sailings and nothing else. If a carrier reports the transit length itself we use that; if it reports only an ETD and an ETA we count the days between them.
A spread rather than a single number is the honest answer. On a busy lane the fastest service and the slowest can differ by two weeks, because one runs direct and the other transships through a hub. That is why the tool shows the range across services alongside how many of the returned sailings are direct, rather than averaging them into one figure that describes no real sailing.
Where the schedule feed returns nothing for a pair — an off-peak lane, a port the feed does not cover, or a temporary outage — the tool falls back to the transit ranges Airlift already publishes on its lane guides, which are P10 to P90 bands drawn from our own shipment history. The page always says which of the two produced the number on screen. If neither covers your pair, it says that too rather than estimating.
What actually moves ocean transit time
Routing is the biggest single factor. A direct service sails port to port; a transshipment routing discharges your container at a hub and waits for a connecting vessel, which typically adds a week or more and adds a point of failure if the connection is missed. The estimator reports the transshipment count the carrier declares on each sailing.
Service string and rotation matter next. Two carriers can quote the same lane while calling at quite different port sequences, and a string with four intermediate calls before yours will always be slower than one that runs straight across. Season matters too: pre-Lunar New Year and the pre-holiday peak both compress schedules and lengthen queues.
Then there is everything the schedule cannot see — congestion at either terminal, blank sailings, weather routing, canal transit restrictions. Carrier schedule reliability across the industry has run well short of full in recent years, which is exactly why we show a range and call it schedule-dependent rather than printing a date.
From port-to-port to door-to-door
The number this tool produces is the ocean leg only: ETD at the load port to ETA at the discharge port. A door-to-door plan needs four more stages around it — origin pickup and drayage, export clearance and cut-offs, US import clearance and release, and final delivery. The timeline below sets out each of them.
We deliberately do not put a day count on those stages. Origin drayage depends on how far inland the shipper sits and whether equipment is available; clearance depends on your entry, your classification and whether CBP or a partner government agency wants a closer look. Publishing an invented range for those would make a plan look more precise than it is. Ask us and we will quote them for your actual shipment.
One planning habit is worth more than any estimate: work backwards from the carrier cut-off, not the sailing date. Documentation, VGM and gate cut-offs fall days ahead of ETD, and a container that misses one waits for the next sailing — which on a weekly service costs a week before the ocean leg has even started.
