Freight forwarder for imports into Chicago

Chicago has no seaport for ocean containers; it is the largest rail hub in North America, and an import for Chicago lands at a coastal gateway and moves inland by rail or in a domestic trailer. For Asia cargo that is normally Los Angeles and Long Beach; for India, Europe and East Coast services it is New York and New Jersey or Norfolk. The transit table on this page shows the published ocean ranges to those gateways; the inland leg is added on top.

Airlift has no office in Chicago. The US side of each shipment is run from the Los Angeles or New Jersey office, whichever gateway the container comes through: the Importer Security Filing, the customs entry filed by a licensed broker, and the rail or truck booking to Illinois.

How a container reaches Chicago

On the ocean carrier's through bill (an IPI move), the container is loaded on rail at or near the port and collected at a Chicago-area ramp of BNSF, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern or CSX, where drayage runs to your door. The container is then returned to the ramp, not the coast. The alternative is a transload at a partner warehouse near the port, where the cargo is reloaded into a 53-foot domestic trailer or container for the rest of the trip; that suits lighter, high-cube cargo and lets three ocean containers become two domestic ones.

Customs clearance can happen at the coast or in bond to Chicago. Which gateway, which rail move and where the entry is filed are decided together before the vessel sails, so give the delivery address and the commodity in the inquiry.

  • Los Angeles and Long Beach, by BNSF or Union Pacific rail (Asia cargo)
  • New York and New Jersey, by rail or truck (India and Europe cargo)
  • Norfolk, by Norfolk Southern rail
  • Chicago O'Hare (ORD) for air freight

Port pages: Los Angeles (USLAX), sailings; Long Beach (USLGB), sailings; New York (USNYC), sailings; Newark (USEWR); Norfolk (USORF), sailings. Look up any port's code in the port code finder.

From the Chicago ramps to the door

Drayage from the Chicago-area intermodal ramps is arranged through contracted motor carriers to warehouses in Chicago, the Joliet and Elwood logistics parks, northwest Indiana, Milwaukee and the rest of Illinois. The ramps work on appointments and free time much as the ports do, so the pickup is booked as soon as the rail carrier notifies the container's arrival. Airlift arranges the move as a broker; it owns no trucks or warehouses in Illinois.

Airlift USA has been in business since 1999 and is an FMC-licensed NVOCC (FMC No. 016162), not a customs broker: the customs entry is filed through its licensed customs-broker network, and US trucking is arranged as a non-asset, FMCSA-licensed property broker through contracted motor carriers. Not enough cargo to fill a container? See LCL ocean freight; for a tight deadline, international air freight.
