Freight forwarder for imports into Atlanta

Atlanta is served by the Port of Savannah, roughly 250 road miles away, and by Charleston for the Carolinas side of the metro area. An ocean container for an Atlanta warehouse lands at Garden City Terminal and is trucked up Interstate 16 and 75 or railed to a Georgia inland port. The transit table on this page shows the published ocean ranges to Savannah and Charleston; the road leg is added on top.

Airlift has no office in Georgia. The US side of each shipment is run from the New Jersey office: the Importer Security Filing, the customs entry filed by a licensed broker, the terminal appointment at Savannah and the truck to Atlanta.

How a container reaches Atlanta

Most Atlanta-bound containers are trucked straight from Garden City Terminal by contracted motor carriers, a same-day move. The alternatives are rail: Mason Mega Rail on the terminal loads to CSX and Norfolk Southern for the Atlanta-area ramps, and the Georgia Ports Authority's Appalachian Regional Port in Crandall, north of Atlanta, and the Gainesville Inland Port let a container be collected in north Georgia instead of at the coast.

Stone, tiles and other dense cargo can make a container legal to ship and still too heavy for the road; the South Atlantic Consolidated Chassis Pool at Savannah does not supply tri-axle chassis, so a heavy container is planned with the trucker before the pickup. We check the gross weight before the container is stuffed at origin.

  • Port of Savannah, Garden City Terminal, by truck or by CSX and Norfolk Southern rail
  • Appalachian Regional Port (Crandall) and Gainesville Inland Port, by rail
  • Port of Charleston, by truck or by Norfolk Southern rail via Inland Port Greer
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) for air freight

From Savannah to the Atlanta warehouse

Delivery to the Atlanta metro area, including the warehouse districts around Interstate 285, Interstate 85 and the Fulton Industrial corridor, is a truck move from Savannah or a drayage from the Atlanta-area rail ramps. The container then returns empty to the terminal or the ramp inside the carrier's free time. Airlift arranges the move as a broker; it owns no trucks or warehouses in Georgia.

Airlift USA has been in business since 1999 and is an FMC-licensed NVOCC (FMC No. 016162), not a customs broker: the customs entry is filed through its licensed customs-broker network, and US trucking is arranged as a non-asset, FMCSA-licensed property broker through contracted motor carriers. Not enough cargo to fill a container? See LCL ocean freight; for a tight deadline, international air freight.
